Opus One - Grade 9
Opus One, the grade 9 Jazz ensemble at MDHS, is composed of students in the grade 9 instrumental music program. The group rehearses together every Wednesday after school under the guidance of Mr. Harrison. These budding musicians learn standards in jazz repertoire, and are given a chance to develop their essential jazz basics through the fun repertoire choices. The ensemble performs several times during the year such as the annual Cabaret talent show in front of the entire music family.
Monday Morning Blues - Grade 10
The Monday Morning Blues Band is the grade 10 jazz band, where students can continue their growth and development as jazz musicians. Contrary to their name, the band does not rehearse Mondays before school, but rather on Wednesdays after school under the direction of Mr. Caswell. As these students learn and grow both as individual musicians and as an ensemble, they are presented with a multitude of performance opportunities. From the Insert performance here, a more laid back gig with friends, to their formal performances at each of our concerts, there are plenty of opportunities to show off your talent to the world. If you love jazz music, you will not want to miss out on this ensemble.

With the many solo opportunities for individuals to shine, as well as complex passages that bring out the best in the ensemble, this is a unique and amazing band to be a part of.
Many performance opportunities throughout the year give everyone the chance at solos, while bringing high quality jazz music to Markham. From rocking Insert performance here at the beginning of the year, to their last performance together at The Dutchess, and everything in between, this band is definitely worth being a part of.
